Yard Waste Transfer Facility

The Authority received approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to keep its compost site open in a modified format for use as a yard waste transfer facility.  The site has shifted from a compost operation to a transfer facility for yard waste.  Compost activities are no longer conducted, but the shift enables the Authority to continue to provide an outlet for yard waste. 

Yard waste received at the Yard Waste Transfer Facility is shredded and shipped off-site to end users within 30 days.  Rapid shipment of the material to end users is aimed at eliminating regulatory issues associated with storm water runoff. 

What do I do with my yard waste?

Yard waste delivered by residents to the Resource Recovery Center (RRC) will be diverted to the yard waste transfer facility provided the material is free of  contaminants and meets end user requirements.  Yard waste delivered that is contaminated or unacceptable to the end-user will be mixed with regular garbage and processed at the RRC.

Residents are encouraged to check with their waste hauler and/or municipality to determine what other disposal options are available.  The Authority is working with municipalities to support a decentralized approach to the management of leaf and yard waste in York County .  A number of municipalities already offer yard waste programs for their residents and we encourage residents to contact their municipal office for information.  

What about grass clippings?

Best option: Use a mulching mower and let your grass clippings work for you.  Mulched grass provides moisture and nitrogen to keep your lawn looking great.  If you don’t have a mulching mower, low-cost conversion kits are available that fit most mowers.  Another idea: Place grass clippings on your vegetable garden (only if your grass clippings are herbicide-free) or around your hedges. Create a backyard compost bin. There are many varieties in stores or you can make a bin of your own.  Last Resort: Place grass clippings in your regular garbage.
