New Regulation Bans Mercury Termostats from Disposal

Mercury Thermostats Are NOT Accepted at the RRC
The PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (PADEP) has announced that Act 97 of 2008 is now in effect, banning disposal of mercury thermostats in any solid waste disposal facility. No person, municipality or operator of a solid waste treatment, processing or disposal facility shall knowingly dispose, permit the disposal of, or send to a resource recovery facility for processing, a mercury thermostat from which the mercury has not been removed for reuse, recycling or other methods approved by the PADEP.

Effective IMMEDIATELY, mercury thermostats will not be accepted for processing at the York County Resource Recovery Center unless the mercury has been removed.

Act 97 was created to encourage the safe removal of mercury from the waste stream by getting manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to monitor and control the end-use of their products. The York County Solid Waste Authority accepts mercury thermostats from residents for free at its Household Hazardous Waste Collection programs.
