Tour the York County

Resource Recovery Center

The Resource Recovery Center uses garbage as fuel to generate electricity.

Tours of the Resource Recovery Center (York County's waste-to-energy facility) are available by appointment Monday through Friday.  Daytime and evening tours are available.

Tours consist of an orientation session in the Education Center, followed by a walking tour of main areas of the facility.

Tour stops include a visit to the "Tipping Floor" where waste haulers enter the facility to discharge truck loads into a large waste storage pit; the Turbine Generator Room where steam produced by the heat of burning garbage is used to produce electricity; and the Control Room where visitors view the inside of the combustion units via remote camera.

Tours of the Resource Recovery Center are available for individuals, or groups of up to 60 people ranging in age from six years to adult.  Tour presentations are modified to suit various age levels and time constraints.  An average tour (including the orientation session) takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.  Participants should wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes.  All participants are required to follow facility safety rules.  Hard hats and safety glasses are provided.

All programs offered by the York County Solid Waste Authority are free to York County residents.

The facility is accessible to people with disabilities.  Persons requiring special accommodations are asked to contact the Authority in advance.

To schedule a tour call 717-845-1066.  Please allow a minimum two-week notice to schedule a tour.
