Public Outreach: Our Open Door Policy

As a public entity dedicated to serving York County residents, the Authority is committed to building strong ties to its community and fostering citizen participation in responsible management of waste.  Aggressive public outreach and education programs provide people with the information they need to learn how to better manage their waste.

The Authority operates an Education Center through which a wide variety of free educational programming is offered to individuals, schools and civic groups.  The programs associated with the Education Center provide insight into our operations, projects and activities.  In addition to this facility, special events, civic and school presentations, facility tours, and participation in community expositions are conducted throughout the year.  Approximately 10,000 people are served through these activities annually.

The following are highlights of some of the Authority’s most popular public outreach/education programs:

Our Tour Scholarship Program, initiated in 1995, has  accommodated more than 9,000 students to date.   The program provides funding for transportation costs for York County students to tour the York County Resource Recovery Center and visit the Education Center.  In return, students participate in a waste management-related project (such as litter clean up, or starting a school recycling program).

The Authority sponsors the York County Science Fair to encourage students to pursue careers in environmental endeavors.

The Authority also publishes newsletters and brochures that are available at no cost to all York County residents.  E-mail us at webmaster@ycswa.com with your name and address if you wish to be added to our newsletter mailing list.

Our "OPEN DOOR" Commitment: We welcome and encourage public participation and invite you to visit our Education Center, tour the Resource Recovery Center, or attend our public meetings.  To schedule a tour or Education Center visit, call 717-845-1066.

Public meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM at the Authority’s Management Center, 2700 Blackbridge Road.

Finally, our ability to be responsive to community concerns is always at the forefront of our efforts. In addition to a 24-hour community hotline number (call 854-3828), we respond to community concerns and track outcomes on a computer database.

Our response system is a multi-tiered process which includes discussion with the caller to collect first-hand data, field investigation by Authority staff, review of operational and weather data, and a final verbal and written follow-up with the caller.
